How Do I Use Teams?

What is Teams?

Teams is a Microsoft Office 365 collaboration workspace. It brings together instant messaging, threaded conversations, file sharing, voice and video conversations, and more.

How do I access Teams?

  1. Download Teams for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, or use Teams on the web.
  2. Log in using your VIU email address and computer account password

Chat should not be used for sharing of any personal information.

How do I request a new team?

Step 1

Read the Teams Pre-Production Roll Out Guidelines

Step 2

Submit a ticket to ithelp@viu.ca with the following information:

  • Date required by:
  • Team owner:
  • Secondary owner:
  • Approved by manager (name):
  • Department:
  • Team name:
  • Team description (1-2 sentences max):
  • Would you like training for Teams as part of this request? (yes/no):
  • I have read and agree to the Teams Pre-Production Roll Out Guidelines (Initials):

The IT department will then review your request and provide you with instructions once the Team has been created.

Help Resources

At this time meetings cannot be schedule directly via the Teams Client. Meetings in Teams must be scheduled via Outlook.

All Teams data is stored within Canada with the exception of private chat messages (located on the 'Chats' tab of Teams). Files attached to private chat messages (located on the 'Chats' tab of Teams) are stored in Canada. Please do not share any private information, as defined by FIPPA, via Teams using private chat messages. Microsoft has estimated that all Teams data will reside in Canada by June 30, 2022. We will update this page if that date changes or when the work is complete.
