How Do I Create a VPN Connection to the VIU Network?

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private communication network. VPN is used to establish a secure connection between a computer that is not on the VIU network (e.g. your home computer) and the VIU network using the Internet.

Note: You cannot connect to the VPN while you are on campus

How do I troubleshoot the VPN?

  • Due to the large number of possible client configurations on laptops, workstation and mobile devices, VIU can only supply limited support for VPN.
  • The instructions use the standard software version for Windows, Apple and Android including VPN client, Windows Firewall, Symantec Endpoint Anti-virus, and a Router supporting VPN connections.
  • If you experience further difficulties, please consult your software and or product documentation.
  • Browsing shared drives via VPN access on mobile devices is not supported by VIU IT Helpdesk.

Unable to map to U: or shared network drives?

  • A user being able to establish a connection to the VIU VPN but not able to map to any share drives is frequently caused by software firewall settings blocking the network traffic. You can try disabling your software firewall and trying to connect to the shared drive again.

Unable to connect?

  • If you previously used and created a VPN connection before January 2017 you must delete and recreate a new one following the new steps posted here as our previous VPN server will have been decommissioned around this time.
