How Do I Create a VPN Connection to the VIU Network?

What is a VPN?

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a private communication network. VPN is used to establish a secure connection between a computer that is not on the VIU network (e.g. your home computer) and the VIU network using the Internet.

GlobalProtect is the system used to connect to the VPN at VIU.

Note: You cannot connect to the VPN while you are on campus

What do I need the VIU VPN for?

What do I not need the VIU VPN for?

  • VIU Email
  • Microsoft 365
  • Teams
  • VIULearn (D2L)
  • Student Record System
  • Employee Portal
  • InViu
  • VIUTube

Who can access the VIU VPN?

VPN access is limited to active VIU employees, and is subject to the terms and conditions specified in VIU's Policy on Use of Information Technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Remote Desktop works over GlobalProtect.

Refer to the “Installing GlobalProtect VPN agent” section above.

Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android. Other operating systems are not currently supported.

Please disconnect and reconnect GlobalProtect. If issues persist, please submit a ticket to ithelp@viu.ca

It is unnecessary, but there are some caveats. Avoid using both in the same login session, as unintended behaviour may occur. If you need to switch back and forth between the VPN solutions, please restart your computer between each session.

Part of the goal of the GlobalProtect VPN was to enhance the cybersecurity at VIU, as such, this is expected behaviour.

Most likely, we updated the minimum supported version of the GlobalProtect Client and your computer downloaded the update. The client will only self update upon new connection so no active connections will be disrupted. Please refer to the IT Maintenance Email for a heads up on changes like this.
