How Do I Run a Virus Scan on my VIU Computer?

This page describes how to perform a full virus scan with Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) and Windows Defender on a VIU device.

If you believe your computer may be infected with malware, please notify us by phoning 250-740-6300 or email ithelp@viu.ca (after hours) and include your computer name.

  1. Click Start. In the search box, type in "Windows Security" without the quotes.

  2. Click Windows Security.

  3. On the left menu, select Virus & Threat protection

  4. Click Scan options

  5. Select Full scan.

  6. Click Scan now.

  7. The scan will start. Please wait for it to complete.

  8. Once the scan is completed, click Protection History. Please notify ithelp@viu.ca if anything is found and include your computer name.

  1. Log in to your computer with your VIU account.

  2. In the notification area (lower-right corner by the clock) look for a small yellow shield icon and double click on it.

  3. The main Symantec window will now open. Click Scan for Threats on the left side.

  4. Click Run Full Scan.

  5. The scan progress window will pop up showing you it's in progress. Please wait for it to complete.

  6. Once the scan is complete please notify ithelp@viu.ca if anything is found and include your computer name.
