How Do I Use Software Center?

What is Software Center?

Software Center allows IT to deliver and update software applications across campus. Software Center will allow you to install a variety of licensed software, updates, and plug-ins on your own computer without having to contact IT for assistance.

How Do I Use It?

  1. If you are off campus, you will need to be connected to the VPN. If you are on campus, skip to the next step.

  2. Click on Start

  3. In the search box, type in "Software Center" without the quotes

  4. Click on Software Center to open it

  5. Click on Applications from the menu on the left to show all available applications

  6. Select the appropriate software from the icons. You will be offered the option to install the application.

  7. Select Install and the installation process will begin

  8. Note: If you only see "uninstall" as an option, you already have the software installed:

  1. Click on Start

  2. In the search box, type in "Software Center" without the quotes

  3. Click on Software Center to open it

  4. Select Applications from the menu on the left

  5. Select the appropriate software from the icons. You will be offered the option to uninstall the application.

  6. Select Uninstall and the process will begin

  2. In the search box, type in "Software Center" without the quotes

  3. Click on Software Center to open it

  4. To view what software applications you have installed, select Installation Status from the menu on the left

Frequently Asked Questions

Software Center does not work on Mac computers. Please contact ithelp@viu.ca for help installing software on a VIU-issued Mac computer.

If you can't find something in the Software Center, please check out the Software at VIU page for instructions on requesting access to the software title you are looking for.

Troubleshooting

If you experience any difficulties trying to install software please contact the IT Service Desk via email at ithelp@viu.ca. Include a screenshot of the error, the name of the software application you were trying to install/uninstall, as well as your computer name so the IT Service Desk can assist you as quickly as possible.

Please contact the IT Service Desk for assistance with clearing your configuration manager cache and forcing software center to update the available software list.

  2. Hold down the Windows Key+R to open the Run menu

  3. Type in "control smscfgrc" without the quotes, then click OK

  4. Select the "Cache" tab

  5. Click Configure Settings

  6. Click Delete Files

  7. Checkmark the “Delete persisted cache content” box, then click Yes

  8. Select the Actions tab.

    • Select "Machine Policy Retrieval & Evaluation Cycle", then click Run Now
    • Select "Software Inventory Cycle", then click Run Now
    • Select "Application Deployment Evaluation Cycle", then click Run Now
