How Do I Create a Remote Desktop Connection from Home?

What is Remote Desktop?

Remote desktop connection is a way to access your VIU Desktop from your home computer. Usually, this is so you can access VIU software that is installed on your VIU computer.

Remote Desktop access is available to active VIU faculty and staff

  1. Workstation located at a VIU campus to connect to
  2. Home computer running Windows 7/10 or macOS 10.12 with Microsoft Remote Desktop installed
  3. High-speed internet connection
  4. VPN connection from your home computer to the VIU network

How do I request Remote Desktop access?

In order to use this service you must first request access from IT. Submit a request to the IT Helpdesk (ithelp@viu.ca) asking for Remote Access to be setup on your VIU computer. Include your VIU workstation computer name. You will be notified by the IT Help Desk once the access has been granted. After you receive notice that your office computer is ready to go, you can proceed to the next step.
