How do I get administrator access on my VIU computer?

What is Make Me Admin?

Make Me Admin is an application for Windows that allows standard user accounts to be elevated to administrator-level for a period of 15 minutes.

Elevated Local User Privilege Agreement

Please read the following “Use of Elevate Local User Privileges” (ELUP) Agreement. By proceeding, you agree to these terms.

When granted Elevated Local User Privileges on a VIU computer you must:

  • Never share your account or allow others to access your account.
  • Not uninstall, replace, or reconfigure any VIU IT loaded applications or system policies on the computer.
  • Ensure any software loaded onto the computer has appropriate license terms so it can be legally used.
  • Be vigilant when using your computer and immediately report any strange behaviour to IT as quickly as possible. Please mention you have administrative access to your computer when reporting.
  • Understand that if a computer becomes unstable or unusable IT may re-image the computer back to a default standard state. This may cause you and any other user that has logged into this computer to lose all data saved locally and any customizations.
  • Agree to not access other user profiles and local files that may be present on the computer.

Step 1: Install the "Make Me Admin" Application

  1. If you are off campus, connect to the VIU VPN

  2. Click on Start. In the search box, type in “Software Center” without the quotes

  3. Click on Software Center to open it

  4. From the list of software, choose Make me admin
    Install Make Me Admin

  5. Click Install. If the only open is “Uninstall”, then the Make Me Admin application is already installed.

  6. The Make Me Admin application is now installed.

  1. Click on Start. In the search box, type in “Company Portal” without the quotes

  2. Click on Company Portal to open it

  3. Click the Search icon

  4. Search for "Make me Admin", then choose it

  5. Click Install. If the only open is “Reinstall”, then the Make Me Admin application is already installed.

  6. The Make Me Admin application is now installed.

Step 2: Run the "Make Me Admin" Application

Running the Make Me Admin application will escalate you to a local administrator for a period of 15 minutes.

  1. Click Start

  2. In the search box, type in “make me admin”

  3. Click on “Make Me Admin” to load the application

  4. If you are authorized to obtain administrator rights, and you are not already an administrator, the “Grant Me Administrator Rights” button is enabled. Click on “Grant Me Administrator Rights”

  5. You should get a popup notification that you are now a member of the administrators group:
    You are now a member of the administrators group
    Once the administrator access has expired, you will receive a notification that you are no longer a member of the administrators group:
    You are no longer a member of the administrators group
